If anyone knows me, you know how much I LIVE for the 90's! I am the walking talking spokeswoman for "If the love doesn't feel like 90's R&B love...I don't want it." Recently I've been obsessed with this NEW show on The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) that aired last week called, "Love Is". The show makes you feel like you've taken a trip back to the nostalgic 90s and dived head first into what BLACK love might have been and felt like for us in our 20 somethings in the 90s. It's the love story of how a couple reminiscences on how they met and got to being 20+ years in deep of a happy marriage and who met once upon a time in a coffee shop all because Yesir's homeboy had him go over to talk to Nuri, who he'd been crushin hard on for months...the only thing is when Yesir approached Nuri on behalf of his friend he instantly became fond of her himself! Now to give you a undertsanding of these two main characters:
Nuri is a young successful hard working BLACK woman! She's confident, gorgeous and the world is her oyster. She's career driven and ambitious and had about 2-3 different guys in rotation that she DATED. No different from most men today! She's the epitome of a woman that commands attention in any room she walks in. However given this was the 90's you really see her fight to have her voice as a woman heard in an industry that men dominated! She's fierce, indepedent and just bought her own house and is living the LIFE as a young single black woman! Yesir is a young black man who's situation is a little bit of a hot mess ya'll. His role is that of a young brotha working to become a writer just like Nuri but is struggle bussing it foreal! He has no job, no car, lives with his ex-girlfriend/roommate who more than anything is sick and tired of him and just wants him pull his weight and pay his half of the rent. The clothes on his back are few and far between. He's broke as a joke but has a passion for writing, is smooth af and loves him some Nuri. He jumps through hoops to figure out his feelings for having fallen head over heels for Nuri while walking on egg shells with his ex. Now obvi from the first two episodes you already know they end up together for LIFE but you can tell off bat they're gonna go through a little hell cuz Yesir still needs to boss up and man up! But lets turn this back over to Ms. Nuri! In today's world, it's hard being a young single black woman for many reasons...but it's even harder to be a young single black woman that actually has her SHIT together and her head on right...you might have a few kinks to work out but if you're degreed up, have a good paying job, a car, your priorities and values are in check and you are simply doing the damn thing then sis two snaps for you! But to keep it 100, dating is NOT a cake walk most young, up and coming successful black women!
In fact, sometimes its a lot like riding a unicycle and fighting to keep your balance while guys are on the sides trying to snatch your heart out of your chest and their hands are on fire and you're trying to protect it without getting burnt and maintaining your balance! But in a world where most of us are still in our 20 somethings wondering where love is or if we'll all end up as a human version of the saying, "Focus on your career because it'll never wake up one day and say it doesn't love you anymore", in this world full of many versions of Yasirs still trying to get it together, YOU gotta find your inner Nuri, the girl that acknowldges that she has her shit together and wont settle or lower her standards for anything or anyone. The girl who desires a love that will love her even when he's not there, a love willing to make it work, a love that sees her worth. Be that girl! and while you're killing the game and climbing the ladder of success and whether you're dating a spare or even a pair...do you and remember your worth while you wait on your very own Yesir and create your own definition of what LOVE IS!
