New York yet again was a blast! I stayed with a friend of mine who now attends Colombia (soooo freaking proud of this boss chick). I had taken a red eye flight out due to having class earlier that day and wanted time to run last minute errands because let's be honest, who's fully packed and ready to go out of town the day of? lol. When I finally landed, we sat over tea in her super small and cute NY apartment and dished about what all has been going on in Seattle since she had left and she filled me on how she's been doing since having moved to NY. I was so exhausted after my flight I took a quick nap and jetted off with her to Colombia. While she was in class, I sat int he student lounge and worked on my final epistemology paper, which in our program is our thesis but not realIy lol besides what grad student do you know of that never has an assignment or anything NOT due. We then dipped out after her class to have ramen and mind you aside from top ramen I had NEVER, I repeat NEVER had authentic Ramen a day in my life before. It was to die for!!!!! To this day I'm still obssessed!
Anywho, initially I had flew there to attend a conference at Rutgers University where Dr. Nancy Boyd-Franklin did a lecture on working with African American clients and families, which was a phenomenal experience considering she was the first African American psychologist that I had ever heard do a lecture. As a young African American woman studying Marriage and Family Therapy and aspiring to pursue my Ph.D in the field, I was in awe the entire time she spoke. Now to play this out for you, my friend was suppose to attend this conference with me but unfortunately had to work. So I was on my own to navigate the streets from NY to NJ. Luckily I ran into this super sweet young lady who was also going my way and attending the conference as well, so we commuted together. Literally you would have thought we had known eachother a lot longer than an hour lol. We had such a fun time enjoying the conference and I even got Dr. Franklin to autograph and sign her book entitled, " Black Families in Therapy". I finally make it back to NY and enjoy a quiet night of us Sabrina binging on Netflix. The next day we pampered ourselves with gel manis and I later met up with my cousin who I hadn't seen since I was little. We laughed and caught up on family matters and history and then off I was to a Halloween party. Talk about an eventful 4 days in NY and simply enjoying history and the company of others! Until next time NY...
